I'm green, green, green

and not because St. Patty's Day is coming up. It is just plain amazing to me that so many people are taking cruises, and spending spring breaks at beaches, etc. I just received an e-mail from a co-room parent in my son's class asking me if I could send out reminder notices for the upcoming carnival at the school...because she's busy packing for Disney...um, okay?

A very close friend just told me they decided to go on a cruise for their summer vacation. Their son is graduating from high school so they decided to spend $$$$$$$$$$$$ to take their family of 5 on a 9 day cruise.

Another close friend also is cruising it this summer. Her older daughter is graduating from college, and her second daughter is graduating from high school, and they thought it would be "fun" to do a cruise. They invited us along. Hmmm, $2000.00 per person. We come as a tribe of 6....$12,000? I don't think so.

Another e-mail came in today from a longtime friend. She said that she's so sorry it took so long to get in touch, she wants to get together for dinner but not until she gets back from Florida for the week. Her daughter just got back from a cruise with friends, and her other daughter is taking a trip to the Florida Keys with her friends.....

And these are just a few (there are plenty more, believe me) Now, I truly don't begrudge any of them. Good for them that they can go, and afford it too! (At least, I think they can afford it???) But I truly am amazed at how many people are spending THOUSANDS of dollars on these vacations.
So, if there is truly a recession coming, you would never know it by my friends, or from most of Northern Virginia.

Uh oh, I'm one of the ones planning a trip too!! It'll probably make me sick if I can't save enough money and I have to take from my savings though...

Actually, I didn't even think of your trip when I was writing this. :) And you'll save enough! I have complete confidence in you!!!

I wouldn't normally be affected by this, but my kids often wonder why we don't go away for spring break or do what other families are doing. I do share that we have chosen to spend our money on other things, but it is still hard. I just think it is funny. A cruise is the vacation of choice this year!

A lot of folks I know take vacations during winter break, to get away from New England weather to someplace warm, or to go skiing. My sister used to take her 3 kids and hubby away to FL or AZ, but this year she skipped it. She said it was because they couldn't get a place, but in looking at some of the other decisions she's made lately (less expensive car, for example), I think she's quietly cutting back on their expenses. I'm in FL right now (flying home today) and it is not crowded at all.

Ct Mom,
Hope you had a good time in Florida. What part of Florida were you in? I think most Spring Breaks are this week and next. Good for you for not going during "peak" weeks!
