Grocery shopping...ugh!!!

I've been very negligent in keeping food in this house. I'm not use to feeding two more adults on a daily basis...cereal boxes that use to be half full are now gone....I guess it doesn't help that my two older daughters don't start working until the beginning of June. They work up quite the appetite when they are home all day doing nothing...

Do you hear the sarcasm? Perhaps it's because I just ran out to do a quick shop (at our cheap grocery store) so that the kids will have something to eat for lunches. We were out of american cheese (the only sandwich my son will eat) and we needed some fruits and snacks. We did end up buying some toilet paper (we seem to go through that quicker too!), and a few other things...my husband's peanuts, soda and orange juice, but that was about it.

Guess how much????? $98.00!!!!!! I'm sure this is a good $30.00 more than it used to be. Truth be told we really got nothing.....I could not believe that it was that expensive!! I guess I need a new budget for food....probably at least $250.00 a week....or maybe I just need to plan more and shop in bulk at Bj's.

I'm frustrated too because our gasoline bill came in and it was double what we use to pay. It went from an average of $200.00 to almost $400.00!!

How are people doing this????

Sigh. Sigh. and Sigh.

Hang in there Sharon! Yes, everything is going up ... will your older daughters be able to contribute once they start working? Going to BJ's will help too.

One question - are your cupboards pretty bare before you go shopping? I finally had to get my kids out of the habit of putting stuff on the list until we finished what we have. They're not too happy right now because I'm making them finish all the breakfast foods in the pantry before I'll buy more cereal. The same with the snack foods in our snack bin - they bring a snack to school each day, and it was too easy to fill it up rather than finish what we had. I've cut our trips back to every 7 to 10 days.

Now if I could just break my husband of his CVS habit ...

CT Mom,
Well, unfortunately, the cupboards are getting bare. We are out of most everything. Part of this shortfall is because I haven't had a free weekend to do a decent grocery shop. During the week we have baseball games, soccer games, practices, etc. so we eat dinner on the run. A quick hotdog, a grilled cheese sandwich...

So..if I could just have some time to plan out a menu and grocery shop around it I would do much better...

Adding my two daughters to the mix only exasperates the situation, because they are finishing up the already bare cupboards.

Once they start working, I'm sure it will be better...but I must say, this is mostly my shortcoming on letting the grocery shopping just go...

With food prices rising, I will just have to be more diligent...I just need "time".

Any ideas?

I wish there was a secret to this that I could share. I think the main thing for us is keeping our priorities straight. Making sure the necessities stay necessities and luxuries stay luxuries. We don't eat terribly "healthy" but we don't get junk food either. We don't do a whole lot of driving, but not everyone is able to do that.
I'm not anticipating things to ever get cheaper again, so we are preparing in our budget for increased costs across the board.
