6th Grade Math

When did they start teaching algebra in grade school? My children no longer ask me to help with their math homework, as I thought I had the right answer above. :)

Can I guess? Seems so long ago. I'm sure I am wrong, but I have to try.

4cm x 3cm
--------- = 6 cm
2

Please - break it to me gently.

Dedicated,
Gosh, I have no idea how to solve this. I'm sure I used to know.

Ha! That's hilarious. Do you solve this with a2+b2=c2? Is the answer 5?

I don't have the answer to the above, it was more a joke than a problem, so I have absolutely no clue how to solve this one. Actually, this was not a problem my daughter brought home, but one that was similar. I found this problem on "bumper stickers" on Facebook and laughed, but it is not too far off on how I can help my kids :). So, is there any math genius' out there who actually knows the answer for sure? We have two guesses..who's right?

The correct answer is five. The square of the two sides is equal to the square of the hypotenuse. Honestly, it's simple algebra, so I better not get called a genius. (I get enough comments about being pre-med...)

Thanks for posting the picture, it's great! I think I've seen it before, but it made me laugh quite a bit again!

Okay - I cheated - after all we need to feel like High School - right?

I asked my son- the math team captain -

To calculate a Right Triangle - which this is

it is c² = a² + b²

so 4² + 3² =c²

16 x 9 = 25

25 = c²

that mean c = 5

The winner is AsGreen
