Real Estate Assessments, The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

I just received the 2008 tax assessments for our home. The good news? Our tax bill went down $1,000.00!!! The bad news? Our home value went down by more than $100,000. At first I was upset, but then I thought about it. The house across the street just sold for over $650,000 (what I had figured our house was worth). And, it sold in two weeks. The fact that we have no intention on selling also makes this a win win situation. I get an extra $83.00 a month. But it also cautions me. There is still a chance that real estate could decrease in the future. If I want to make any improvements, I will make sure I have cash to do them. No more HELs for us. Because you just never know...

If you aren't planning a move any time soon, I'd say this is great news! You can put that money somewhere else... it's a win-win situation :-)

Our assessments usually come out on March 1st. We're in what's considered a village, so our taxes are very low (around $800/year)

Ours will be $5000 for the year...I like your taxes better! :)

Hi Sharon - taxes went down? Wow, that never happens ... we had a revaluation in 2006, and ours went up 40%. Homes in the $650K range stayed the same. Our taxes are $4200 on a ~$250K valuation. I like your taxes better - and Canadian Savers the best!

CT Mom,
I'm a little leary of what the county is doing with the assessments. It seems they are raising the land value by more than double, and lowering the structure value by double. What's with that?

Our assessment will probably go up a bit this year... I'll post about that when we get the bill.

It's not bad for 30 acres in the country nope! We don't get a lot of the services most of you guys do though (this does cover trash and fire service)

Sharon, I've tagged you yet again for another meme, if you are interested. This one's less complicated :-)
