Grocery Shopping with Cash....

I went grocery shopping this morning and spent $170.75 in cash...I have $28.50 left in my food budget for the next 9 days. I made a menu for two weeks and made a list and I stuck to the list..with the exception of a couple of loss leaders that I purchased at the store. I bought organic meats which cost a bit more, and some organic vegetables. This shop should last for the next 9 days..I will spend the remainder cash on milk, bread, eggs as needed. It was a strange feeling using cash. I was more careful of what I put in my cart, although I wish I brought my calculator. It would have made it a bit less stressful. Using cash made me more aware of just what things cost...switching lunch snacks for the kids, putting stuff back, actually looking for more value.

I'm not yet able to think about a "envelope" system where I have cash for all items, I'll just start with groceries and see how it goes!

Sounds very organized!! I bet you'll be eating well :-)

I was in the store on Friday wishing I had my calculator too! I'll often keep track in my head then run into someone and talk and lose track....

Yeah!

We saved over 33% on our grocery bill doing this. Stick to it. Once comfortable change over completely.

Yes, I think I will, because it's making me think twice about purchases. I find when I use a credit card it's not real money!

That sounds like such a good idea. I wish I could be that organized :)

You're off to a great start! Once you get the hang of it, the nerves will be gone and you'll become a pro.

I've started to pay with cash directly from my budget as well and it definitely does make you more aware of what your actually throwing in that cart!
